Subject: Important Update – What the New US Tariffs Mean for Your Tweedmaker Order
Dear Gentlemen,
Ryan here from Tweedmaker with an important update regarding recent changes to US import tariffs—and what it all means for your shopping experience with us.
As many of you have likely heard, on April 2nd, President Trump signed a new executive order affecting how goods are imported into the United States. Two major changes came with this:
- New, broader tariffs on imported goods across many countries.
- The removal of the $800 “de minimis” tax exemption for goods imported from China.
What does this mean? In short: the cost of importing goods from overseas—particularly from China—has just gone up. For many online shoppers, especially those buying from small international businesses like ours, this could raise some concerns about unexpected fees or delays.
At Tweedmaker, transparency and exceptional service have always been at the heart of what we do. So, here’s how we’re responding—and what it means for you:
🔧 What We’re Doing About It
We’re already taking proactive steps to minimize any impact on your experience:
-
Streamlining our shipping process:
Instead of shipping suits individually from our tailor in China to each customer, we are exploring consolidating shipments to our US-based warehouse in Oregon. From there, we’ll ship your order directly to you. - This helps reduce import fees per postal item.
- While it slightly increases our shipping costs, it helps us control the overall price you pay and avoid any surprise customs charges.
-
Exploring local production options:
We’ve previously tested other sources of production, and while quality didn’t meet our standards in the past, we’re actively revisiting this to see how we can offer the same style, craftsmanship, and affordability closer to home. -
Keeping you informed every step of the way:
We’re closely watching how these new rules are implemented and will continue updating you as we learn more.
💬 What This Means for Your Order
While the exact impact of these new tariffs is still unfolding (and won’t be fully clear until after May 2nd), here’s what we do know:
- We expect some US orders to be subject to importation fees.
- To help avoid surprise charges, we’ll now include a small shipping fee at checkout. On all new orders.
- This will help us offset import fees and cover any additional domestic shipping from our Oregon warehouse.
- If the actual import fees end up being higher than this, we’ll continue working to absorb as much of that cost as we can.
- Customers who have placed orders before May 2nd may also be subject to these tariffs, as it is determined by when it is imported and not the order date. We are working on ways to minimise the impact on these orders as well.
If you do get charged a customs fee—even after paying the $30 shipping fee—please reach out to us. While we don’t control customs or shipping carriers, we’re committed to making sure your experience with Tweedmaker is as smooth and fair as possible.
We truly appreciate your understanding and continued support during this transition. Tweedmaker was born from a passion for craftsmanship and a desire to bring classic tweed tailoring into modern life—without breaking the bank. That mission hasn’t changed, and we’re working hard to ensure it never will.
If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always here to help.
Warm regards,
Ryan
